Taken from a concert in Stockholm, Sweden, this well-recorded CD mostly features trumpeters Cootie Williams and Cat Anderson, tenor-saxophonist Paul Gonsalves and altoist Johnny Hodges as the main soloists in a set with Duke Ellington's orchestra. "The Opener," "Blow by Blow" and "The Prowling Cat" have rarely been recorded and even the more familiar pieces are given new life, highlighted by a definitive rendition of "Harlem."

Because Stan Getz was so consistent during his lifetime - very rarely did he record a weak album - one greets a posthumous release like Blue Skies with enthusiasm. Although recorded in January 1982, Blue Skies remained in the can until 1995, four years after the saxman's death from cancer. Joined by pianist Jim McNeely, bassist Marc Johnson, and drummer Billy Hart, Getz is in excellent form on this generally caressing and introspective CD. The only up-tempo offering on Blue Skies is McNeely's cerebral "There We Go"; Getz is quite relaxed on Johnson's dreamy "Antigny" and interpretations of "Blue Skies," "Easy Living," "Spring Is Here," and "How Long Has This Been Going On." True to form, Getz makes the listener marvel at his tone throughout the album; without question, he had one of the sexiest, most gorgeous tones in the history of jazz. It's unfortunate that this excellent material went unreleased for 13 years.

For Example is an another band from the SWF-broadcast vaults, with their recording they did in 1973. The band, founded in the late sixties, consisted of students of various study fields. In the beginning they played under the name 'Frida III' cover versions of sixties hits, but after they had been taken on for 2 productions by the State Theatre Tübingen, they changed their music style, added three wind players with jazz experience and formed 'For Example'. At first they played pieces of their favourite bands 'Chicago' and Blood, Sweat and Tears', but their repertoire also comprised soul numbers with horn sections. Step by step they added self composed titles and found their own music style, still influenced by their favourites…

Nobody ever heard this group perform in front of the public, although each of the players had plenty of bandstand experience. The Charleston Chasers existed only as a studio recording ensemble, first as another way of saying Red Nichols & His 5 Pennies, then as Columbia's all-purpose jazz machine. Nichols himself appeared on the 1927 and 1928 recordings, while Miff Mole, stern emperor of the trombone, held everyone together over several years' worth of solid jazz, beginning in 1925 with "Red Hot Henry Brown" and its flip side, "Loud Speakin' Papa." These sound like Bix Beiderbecke in all the right ways. "Someday, Sweetheart" is a masterpiece of evenly paced group reflection…

Arian Shafiee plays guitar with Brooklyn-based dance punk band Guerilla Toss, and composes music for an imagined large ensemble under his given name. Beauty Tuning, his first release as a solo artist, showcases Shafiee’s prodigious command of fretless and microtonal guitars, blasting listeners with doses of ecstatic Moroccan harmony and minimalism-inspired improv in the style of late downtown New York.

José Padilla is a Spanish disc jockey and producer of ambient music, best known for his work as DJ in the Café del Mar bar on the island of Ibiza. Born in Barcelona, Padilla moved to Ibiza in 1975, taking up the DJ residency at Café del Mar in 1991. In 1994, he compiled the first Cafe del Mar album for the React label. The series is now in its 22nd volume and has spun off several related compilations, as well as leading to the creation of the bar's own eponymous label. Padilla selected tracks for the first six, as well as the 20th-anniversary commemorative release…

This two-fer from Dutton features a pair of out of print LPs by easy listening artist Ted Heath, Those Were the Days and Big Band Themes Remembered, Vol. 2, originally issued in 1971 and 1973. These 21 remastered tracks find the conductor/arranger interpreting swing standards "Moonlight Serenade," "Flying Home," "One O'Clock Jump," and "Tuxedo Junction." This is an enjoyable reissue chosen from Heath's numerous Decca albums.

Sometimes dreams, visions, fantasy worlds, stars and galaxies seem closer than the human reality… This is the main idea of the composition "So Far And So Near", and it has become the central idea of the Eternal Wanderers' album of the same name. The album contains 8 art/progressive/psychedelic rock compositions with total time 64 minutes. Many of them include the orchestral elements. Within the central idea of the album the compositions touch such topics as the beginning of the World ("And The World Will Be"), beauty lost in wars of all times and sadness that remains ("Mounds"), thoughts about the Man and Fate ("Thread Of Love"), hardly amenable to reason energy of light ("Energy Of Light"). The idea determines the mood of the music - from purely sad "And I Will Follow", solemn "And The World Will Be" to expressive "Energy Of Light" and "As You Wish, I Care Not".

Dialeto is an Art-Rock/Prog-rock band formed in Brazil in 1987. The band today is formed by Nelson Coelho on guitar, Gabriel Costa on bass and Fred Barley on drums. Names like King Crimson, Gentle Giant, Jimi Hendrix, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and Mahavishnu Orchestra has usually been remembered by reviewers to connect Dialeto’s music to the great masters music.

One of Duke Ellington's more unusual albums of the '50s, this live session finds the orchestra performing such songs as "Got a Date with an Angel," "The Peanut Vendor," "Indian Love Call" and even "Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf." Amazingly enough the music works quite well for Ellington and his all-star orchestra manage to transform what could be a set of tired revival swing into superior dance music and swinging jazz. While certainly not the most essential Ellington record, At the Bal Masque is a surprise success.
